Roles we played as kids today…

affects who we are, and how we behave / act / re-act today. In an email from today:

Continuing on our theme this quarter, The Level of Success You Achieve is Directly Connected with Your Level of Self Awareness, I want to focus on another insight that you can put into action to elevate your career or business…How the Roles We Played as Children Impact Our Success Today

I am not here to play your therapist, but I am here to connect the dots between our unconscious actions and the outcomes they create.

Over the years the number one frustration that has been brought to me is how do I achieve a higher level of success? What am I doing wrong? Why do I continue to be passed over for promotion? What has to change for me to get traction with my business and end the struggle.

The answer to those questions is increase your level of self -awareness. However, with that said I understand it is not a switch you flip and go…ahhhh…I see clearly now.

So I am going to show you how understanding what is going on internally is impacting your outward results AND to give you a format to follow that will help you bring more value to all you do…aka…get noticed and achieve your desired level of success. What I am about to share with you is true whether you had a challenging childhood or one of grace. We all played roles – we did what we thought we needed to do in order to be loved and safe. There is a gift inside each one of these roles…if we choose to become aware of it, release the story that created it and tap into the skill that was developed from it.

Here are a few brief examples of what I am talking about:

If you grew up feeling like you had to be a PERFECTIONIST to be loved/safe and you have not released that story, then you will not be a good leader, because you will either brow beat your team to do it your way or you will push them aside and do it yourself.

However, if you are conscious of that role and understand that it is not true, you get to be perfectly imperfect and be safe/loved. Then you can harness that perfectionist energy and use it to rally the troupes. Getting everyone on your team involved, playing to their strengths and show upper management that you will do whatever it takes to get the job done and engage your team to do so.

If the role you played was that of being INVISIBLE, then you are very good at not being noticed to feel safe…which is no way to build a robust career or business.

However, if you have made peace with that role then you have a gift of knowing how to run the show from behind the scenes to get the job done smoothly and efficiently. Something not everyone can do.~ Did you take on the role of being a PEOPLE PLEASER, then you learned the art of giving at the expense of yourself. You also don’t make sound business decisions from this place so it will limit your ability to be a leader or the success of your business.

However, if you have become aware of this trait, the impact it has and work to ensure you no longer do that, you have the ability to tap into the gift/skill that it offers; being able to read people and make meaningful connections quickly.

Was your role that of being the family DIPLOMATIf that is true, then for sure your truth and all that was important to you got lost in the day to day of managing others and situations.

When you realize that you really don’t need to maneuver situations you are able to utilize the skill that comes from playing that role; that of knowing how to diffuse a situation or have a difficult conversation without setting people off.

In order to protect yourself, were you the ANGRY FAMILY MEMBER? The person who was emotionally driven, where your feelings overtake the facts ensuring the truth is lost.

If you are conscious of this then you have the ability to turn that anger into passion and engage others on a deep and meaningful level. Creating lasting relationships and team member that will go the distance for you.

Were you the COMEDIAN? Feeling responsible for keeping everyone together, safe and happy.

When you recognize that it is not your job to do that you can take advantage of all that role taught you.

You have a true ability to quickly read a room and know how to bring people together.

There are so many different roles we played growing up. Take a moment and think about what yours were. Make peace with that role, why you played it and look for the learning/gift/skill that you developed because of it.

One of my roles was that of the DIPLOMAT. What is one of the top things’ companies, executives and small business owners turn to me for? Communication strategies that make meaningful connections, how to make a difficult conversation not difficult and be seen as a leader.

What do people turn to you for? What do you do with great ease?

What did the roles you played as a child teach you so that you could navigate your life with greater skill?

Spend some time this month really exploring what comes easiest to you – was that one of the gifts/skills that were developed out of a role you played? How can you capitalize on that?

If you have any questions on this, bring it to my next “Belinda Unplugged” and we can talk it through live and in the moment. (See below for details.)BIG Success in All You Do!
